Spray tanning tips

Many people are beginning to utilize the spray tanning services like Mystic Tan and VersaSpa in order to keep the overall appearance of a bronzed look, but without the use of the sun or a traditional tanning bed. Spray tanning is fantastic and safe, utilizing pigments that are applied to your skin in order to change the appearance without ultraviolet rays, and are quickly becomming the choice of tanners who are looking for an "instant" tan. There are many questions regarding the process that we have been asked over the years, and we would like to present the facts below so you can understand how it all works.

Will using a spray tanning system protect me from sunburn?

The answer is no. There are no "built-in" sunscreens in spray tan systems, including VersaSpa. If you are going to venture into the sunshine for an extended period of time, you must protect yourself with a sunscreen, no matter how many times you have spray tanned.

How dark can a spray tan make me?

While all skin is different, the easiest way to answer this question is that everyone can get nearly any level of color they desire, depending on the type of skin you have. Some people may be very dark after a single session, and others may only be slightly golden. These people will need to use the system multiple times in order to build up a darker color as their skin becomes used to the pigments. Consult our trained staff as to the expected outcomes of your sessions based on your skin type.

Are the tanning solutions used in spray tanning safe?

The FDA has approved all the solutions we use in our VersaSpa system, and there has been nothing found that is harmful in any way. This is not to say that all tanning solutions are safe, however. Many other systems utilize solutions that have not been tested, and some can contain up to 40 chemicles that may be potentially harmful to your skin. Always ask if the system that you will be using is FDA certified.

How long does a spray tan last?

Spray tans can last various lengths of time based upon how you prepare your skin before the session and how you take care of it afterward. In general, most spray tans last between 5 and 10 days, but after your skin gets used to spray tanning, you should hold the color longer.

What can I do to make my spray tan last longer?

The length of time your tan will last depends on how well you prepared before the session, and how you take care of your skin after the session. The most important aspect is to exfoliate before the session. The shallower the dead skin layer is, the longer it will take to fully build up and shed off. This means that the more perfectly you exfoliate your skin before spray tanning, the more even your tan will be and the longer it will last before fading. Additionally, moisturizing your skin every day will prevent premature exfoliation through drying. Ask our trained staff which exfoliants and moisturizers are suggested to get the best results.

Is spray tanning good for fair skinned people who have trouble traditionally tanning?

Spray tanning is perfect for people who have skin that is problematic for traditional tanning. If you burn easily, and have had trouble in the past, the spray tanning system is probably a perfect solution for you to get that golden color you desire.

How long after spray tanning can I shower?

We suggest not showering for at least five hours after a session. This will give the solution more time to work before being washed from the surface of your skin. If there is a bronzer in the solution, you will want to avoid sleeping in a bed or other materials that may be stained by the solution until you shower.

Do I need to shave my arms and legs before a session?

You do not need to shave your body hair before spray tanning. Even though you will notice drops of solution on your hair of your arms and legs after the session, this is simply excess and can be wiped off.

What if I have a bald spot?

If you have a bald spot, you may want to not wear the shower cap that we provide. The solution will not harm your hair, but it will get it slightly wet in this case. Tanning your bald spot is suggested to create a natural look.

Will my spray tan results always be identicle?

No, tanning is different every time because your skin is a living thing that is effected by many elements. These elements can be anything from what you are eating to how dry the air is outside.

If I did not like the way my spray tan came out at another salon, should I assume this is not right for me?

Absolutely not! We at Tan Factory use only the finest equipment and provide the latest advice based upon training and experience. There is a good chance that your spray tan was not satisfactory because of human error or poor equipment. Before you assume it is not for you, give us a try

Does the solution harm your eyes?

We suggest closing your eyes during the session as there is little research as to the outcome of the solution coming in contact with your mucous membranes. Our staff will show you the proper technique to protect your eyes.

Does the solution you use leave a bad smell on my skin?

Absolutely not. After you towel off, you will notice a faint odor, but nothing unpleasant.

I got streaks on my legs at another salon, will this happen at Tan Factory?

Our VersaSpa system is very high tech, and should not provide the streaks that other spray tanning systems sometime leave you with. Bronzers sometimes streak if they are not evened out afte rthe session, so ask the staff what is the best method for post-tan dryoff.

Can I go swimming after my spray tan?

We advise to wait at least five hours before going swimming, and remember that chlorinated water bleaches your tan very easily. This means as little exposure to chlorinated water as possible is suggested to keep your tan long lasting and beautiful.

Can I spray tan if I am pregnant?

We would not suggest spray tanning if you are pregnant.
